Redesign without losing your visitors’ path

Redesign without losing your visitors’ path. A redesign changes how people find information. Before publishing, compare existing addresses with the new structure to preserve useful paths.

Decision criteria

From context
to action.

Clarity helps you make better choices. These are the points worth reviewing.

01

Build an inventory

List current pages, services and links receiving visits. Decide what remains and where it belongs; sending every old page to the homepage is rarely useful.

02

Redirect to the equivalent

When an address changes, a permanent redirect should lead to the page serving the same need. Check for chains and loops.

03

Verify language and navigation

Internal links, canonicals and language alternates should use final URLs. Check images, sitemap, the 404 page and forms on a phone too.

A verifiable example on this website

Mywebsite’s former /seo.php address redirects to /posicionamiento-en-buscadores/, which explains the same service in Spanish. Its English version has a separate address: /en/search-engine-optimization/. Language annotations connect both pages, while each retains its own canonical address.

This pattern preserves the context of an old link. Sending every service URL to the homepage would force visitors to find the expected information again. A retired page without an equivalent should not pretend its content still exists.

What to check during a migration

  1. Inventory: record the former URL, its purpose and its equivalent new address.
  2. HTTP response: a permanent redirect should return 301 and the final page 200.
  3. Short route: avoid chains through several URLs before the destination.
  4. Internal links: point directly to final addresses.
  5. Canonical and languages: check that they do not point to old pages or another language.
  6. Real errors: nonexistent URLs should return 404 with helpful navigation.

Checks continue after publication

A sitemap communicates important addresses but does not compel Google to index them. Search Console can report discovered, indexed and excluded pages and inspect a specific URL. Record the change date and review data after Google crawls the site again.

A bilingual website needs more than a translated menu: links should preserve context between versions, and pages should be accessible without relying on the visitor’s location. This site offers Spanish and English through explicit links.
